What is the 26-week statement from the company physician?

The 26-week statement is a medical assessment of the future of your sick employee. The company physician considers two key factors for the UWV:

Can the employee medically recover enough to return to their own job within 26 weeks?
Will a person's capacity (what they can handle) change over the next 26 weeks?

This advice is a careful assessment by the doctor, but it is no guarantee of future outcomes.

How do I request this advice?

The process for termination due to long-term disability consists of three clear steps:

Step 1: Before the consultation

Discuss with your employee that you have submitted a request for termination due to incapacity for work.
Explain that the UWV is requesting a medical opinion and that, as a result, an appointment will be scheduled with the company physician.
We prefer to schedule the appointment with your own company physician. If that is not possible, we will ask another company physician. The employee must give consent for this (due to the medical record).

Step 2: During the office hours

The company doctor discusses the employee's health and reviews everything they need to know for the 26-week certificate.

Step 3: After the consultation

You and your employee will receive the written recommendation within 5 business days.

Yes. If you apply to the UWV for permission to terminate employment after 2 years (104 weeks) of illness, you are legally required to submit a current statement from the company physician regarding your chances of recovery over the next 26 weeks.

What happens if the employee is able to recover within 26 weeks?

If the company physician expects the employee to be able to return to their regular job (possibly in a modified capacity) within 26 weeks, the UWV will usually deny the application for termination due to incapacity for work.
