Work-related stress? Your team has it, too

Work-related stress has been on the rise for years. Ten years ago, 1 in 8 employees experienced burnout symptoms; now it’s 1 in 5. Do you have ten employees? Then, statistically speaking, two of them are dealing with these symptoms. Most of them just keep working as usual. That’s exactly where your opportunity lies.

In a small team, you immediately notice when someone is out: work piles up, and coworkers have to step in. TNO will publish new figures around Work Stress-Free Week. We’ll share them as soon as they’re available.

A little effort, big results. With these five steps, you can get started as early as this week.

Watch for signs

You know your people. You can tell when someone is stressed mainly by changes that last a few weeks.

For example, note the following:

  • skipping errors or pauses more often;
  • respond curtly or, on the contrary, fall silent;
  • taking sick days more often;
  • sleeping poorly or waking up tired.

Start a conversation

Don’t wait for an employee to call in sick. Just ask, “How are you really doing?” Listen, and make one concrete agreement together. Do you want your managers to learn how to have this conversation effectively? Our workshops and training sessions can help with that.

Make room for recovery

Stress isn't a problem as long as it's balanced with rest. Make sure to take breaks, alternate between heavy and light work, and agree that no one needs to send emails after work hours. And lead by example: if you skip lunch, your team will too.

Get help in time

Every employee is welcome to attend the company doctor’s open consultation hours —without having to call in sick, without your permission, and confidentially.
