What is the WIA again?

The WIA stands for Wet werk en inkomen naar arbeidsvermogen (Work and Income according to Labour Capacity Act). This is a Dutch social insurance scheme designed to support employees who become (partially) disabled due to illness or disability. Since 2006, the WIA has replaced the former WAO (Disability Insurance Act).

The WIA provides various benefits depending on the employee's degree of disability:

  • IVA (Inkomensvoorziening volledig arbeidsongeschiktten): This benefit is intended for employees who are completely and permanently disabled. The income they can still earn is not offset against the benefit.
  • WGA (Work resumption partially disabled): This benefit is for employees who are partially disabled and are still able to work. The amount of the benefit depends on the percentage of loss of earning capacity.

About the revamped application process

One of the most important changes is that employees can now upload their own documents in the application form, including documents from the reintegration report. This offers them more control and convenience in submitting the required information.

Clear agreements

But To avoid potential delays, it is important that you make clear agreements with your employees about who is responsible for submitting which documents. After all, duplicate submissions can lead to unnecessary delays in the processing process.

Clear explanation

In addition to this important change, thethe UWV has also also updated the explanation of the form, making it easier for your employees clearer in which situations they should use this form and which documents they should send along. In addition, some questions have been clarified to make it easier to fill out.

Upload at once

An important point to note is that the form may contain medical information, so it is not possible to retain data stored in the interim. Therefore, the UWV recommends that your employees take sufficient time to complete the form in one sitting and prepare all attachments in advance.

We are confident that these innovations will make the WIA application process more pleasant for both you and your employees. Should you have any further questions or need support, please do not hesitate to contact our Employability Coaches. They will be happy to help you further.
