Workshop The transition and work
For more energy and balance
More and more women are working. Some of them, especially in the age group over 45, are going through menopause. During menopause, women can experience symptoms for a long time.
These symptoms may also affect how they are able to do their jobs. The RIVM studied how often working women in the Netherlands suffer from menopause symptoms.
RIVM also looked at the connection of these complaints with functioning at work. More than 12 thousand working women between the ages of 40 and 66 completed a questionnaire for this purpose. The results show that many working women aged 40 and older suffer from menopause symptoms.
Especially women in perimenopause, the phase surrounding the last menstrual period, report experiencing menopausal symptoms.
Program
Complaints that working menopausal women (very) often suffer from are not just hot flashes and night sweats. In addition to these well-known complaints, they also include libido loss, sleep disturbances and muscle and joint pain.
More than 1 in 3 working menopausal women say they experience limitations in functioning at work because of their symptoms. But less than half of this group experiencing limitations discuss their symptoms at work. This while women who suffer greatly from menopause symptoms are more likely to call in sick, take longer to recover, and are less productive.
Result
Because menopause symptoms are so common, more awareness and knowledge is needed. To this end, it is important to identify the needs for support of women with these symptoms. In addition, insight is needed into what strategies can be employed to improve the sustainable employability of working menopausal women.
