A 100-kilometer bike ride through the rolling hills of Limburg, surrounded by enthusiastic spectators and the colleagues you exercise with, that’s the ZekerArbo in a nutshell. Nick van Loenen participated in the Amstel Gold Race and shares his story.

What was the day like?

The day started early. We parked right next to the VIP pavilion, which saved us a lot of hassle right off the bat. When we arrived, a nice breakfast and a cup of coffee were already waiting for us. It was the perfect way to ease into the day before the 100-kilometer race began.

“My cycling buddies arrived about fifteen minutes later, and we set off shortly after that. We started the day by cycling down the Cauberg early in the morning—an impressive way to kick things off.”

What was the weather like, and why did you choose to wear short sleeves?

What started out as a chilly morning quickly turned into perfect cycling weather. As soon as the sun came out after the start in Valkenburg, it was clear that short sleeves were the right choice.

“On the first climb, we knew right away: this is going to be a great day. You’re riding through the beautiful Limburg countryside, the sun is shining, and there are spectators lining the route—it just gives you energy.”

The route includes ten climbs. What are your highlights?

The 100-km route passes by the Geulhemmerberg, Maasberg, Lange Raarberg, Sweikhuizerberg, Bergseweg, Fromberg, Koulenberg, and Sibbergrubbe, and ends with the famous Cauberg. Each climb has its own character.

“Personally, I thought the Fromberg was the most beautiful climb of the day: a lovely, winding road with stunning views. But the Cauberg as the finale… that’s something special. With all the spectators lining the route, you’re practically carried over the top.”

Was there ever a time when things weren't going so well?

Sports and adventure go hand in hand—and sometimes take a little detour.

“One of my cycling buddies pushed a little too hard on the Geulhemmerberg and missed a turn. We had to look around for a bit, but after that we were fortunately able to continue together. That’s all part of the fun, and it makes for the best stories afterward!”

How was the organization of the day?

ZekerArbo organized the day down to the last detail. From parking to the after-party, everything went smoothly.

“The aid stations along the route were well organized: plenty of space, and multiple stations for drinks and food. After crossing the finish line, we received a nice medal, and you could relax in the VIP pavilion with an Amstel or two 0.0 Radlers, as I did. Then I had some fries and pasta—everything was really well done.”

Why is the ZekerArbo valuable to you?

Getting more exercise is one thing, but exercising together adds a dimension you don’t just find at the gym.

“You get to know your colleagues in a whole new way. On a bike or during a sporting challenge, you quickly let your guard down and show your true self. You laugh, you cheer each other on, one moment you’re talking about the climb, and the next you’re discussing work or your personal lives. That really strengthens the bond between us.”
